These two needlepoint canvases are at the PTA thrift shop in Pittsboro yesterday. Later that afternoon, I saw a bag of white tapestry yarn at the Habitat ReStore. I suspect the white yarn was purchased to complete the canvases, and whoever cleaned out the workroom and donated these items to the resale stream didn’t realize they were supposed to go together.
(Similarly, I found a shower curtain, and matching shower curtain hooks, at the swap shed. They need to be sold together, they are a pair. I stapled the bag of hooks to the shower curtain so that they would stay together at least into the sorting process. The thrift shop may decide they need to be separated. That would be a pity.)
The canvases are chair covers. Their owner didn’t want to do all the colored work. Some people find simple stitching in one color, with no decisions to make, to be relaxing.
The needlepoint canvases were marked at $10 each, which is too much for me to spend to buy raw material that I am not sure about how I will use. Perhaps if the canvases are still there in a week or two, I may consider picking them up. I do have an idea to take the back out of a jeans jacket, and replace it with a completed needlepoint. I could also alter one of my motorcycle coats, either applique needlepoint on top of the jacket or removing a panel and replacing it with needlepoint.
Several years ago, I saw a magazine article about a woman who was making custom cowboy boots. She made the uppers out of recycled needlepoint.
I will hold off on buying these canvas is for now; $10 is too much to spend on raw material. Especially raw material then I’m not clear about using, especially raw material that I already have some of. It’s not clear to my mind how I could make these canvas is mine, any different from what they were intended to be.
January 26, 2017 Update
Went through the PTA Craft bins today, and the canvases are gone. Someone thought they were a good buy at $10 each. Good. Happy they found a home, and happy that I don’t have to try to make art out of them.
Ironic, though; on the way home from that trip to town, I found a Wrangler jean jacket in my size at the swap shed. Grabbed it. Now I have to see what other needlepoint canvas appears.
