In the course of buying every interesting skein of yarn that crossed my path to make poms and lilies for my wedding, I found five balls of Kid Merino, from Crystal Palace Yarns, in Violets. The yarn wasn’t right for the wedding, but it was too pretty to pass up.
After the wedding, I found a copy of Alterknits at the thrift shop, the book that started my rug knitting journey. When I looked through the book, I saw a pattern for a shawl knit in the round, as a tube, with the option to attach a silk scarf inside the tube for contrast. There was a project worthy of the Merino.
There was one false start; the pattern in Alterknits was straight knitting and before I’d done 20 rounds, I was bored to tears. I ripped it all back and found a simple lace pattern that was simple to remember–K4, (YO K2T) twice around, K the next row, slip one to make the lace move on a diagonal line. Now I’m knitting through the third skein.
There’s too much of the shawl already knit for this to be a project that will fit on a motorcycle for our honeymoon trip. That week of knitting requires Honeymoon Socks.
